Transformation through Death

Card #13. Keywords: Endings, beginnings, change, transformation, transition.

Since October is the Month of Metamorphosis I would like to take a moment for some Tarot Empowerment! Tarot cards are exceptionally good tools for self-reflection. They help us change by revealing to us deep, hidden truths and allowing us to explore our unconscious minds through symbolic imagery. Each card represents a different archetype.

Archetypes represent fundamental human motifs of our experience as we evolve; consequentially, they evoke deep emotions. – Carl Golden

The Death card often elicits more emotions than most cards in the Tarot deck. Many of my clients have an inherent misunderstanding of this card. They assume that it literally means someone is going to die and feel anxiety or fear because of it. When I see this card, however, I feel excitement! The Death card announces a period of transformation. Think about how the leaves change colors in the Fall just before the cold wintery months. These changes clear away the growth of the Summer to make room for new growth in the Spring! The cycle of life, death, rebirth is the most natural pattern in the Universe.

Death is symbolic of the ending of a major phase or aspect of your life that may bring about the beginning of something far more valuable and important. You must close one door in order to open another. – Brigit, BiddyTarot

If you are ready for change take a moment to meditate on the image above. What do you notice? How does it make you feel? Write down your reactions in a journal. Pay careful attention to the colors, symbols, or emotions that stand out to you. If you would like help analyzing your experience with the Death card feel free to leave comments!

Death encourages you to let go of what is no longer working in your life. Take time to clean, purge, clear away and release. Remember that when you let go of things that no longer serve you, you make room for new, more fulfilling things to enter into your life!

  1. Kay,
Every living thing-humans, animals, plants-will “die” at some point. This is inevitable. One’s awareness of this essential fact can be used for motivation and accomplishment, fearlessness and assertiveness, greater compassion and sharing.
    Thank you,

    • Right you are, Jerry.

The more spiritually connected I allow myself to be the more I eliminate my fear of death. Ultimately, I hope to help myself and others pass on peacefully. I love creating sacred space and feeling the protection and love within it. I think for the dying (and also those giving birth!) a sacred space can make the transition much more peaceful.

  2. Kay,
I love your posts and your analogies using the Tarot are always right on. I will be visiting.
