Tarot Tips for the Holidays: Enjoy Life in a Balanced Way

Hello, and welcome to my second post in the series I’m calling “Tarot Tips for the Holidays.” Each post offers exercises with Tarot cards meant to help you foster peace, understanding, compassion and Love this holiday season. Today’s Tip: Ground Yourself

Emphasis: Balance, Taking what you need

Chakras: Root Chakra, Sacral Chakra & Solar Plexus Chakra

The 9 of Pentacles can teach us to enjoy the finer things in life. This woman is successful and has manifested the things she enjoys through diligence, patience and an unswerving belief in her own inner power. She knows she is a creative force and she knows she deserves the good things that come to her. She enjoys a life of leisure, taking enough time to herself to make the most of the good things in her life. When she drinks wine she sips it slowly and enjoys it with all of her senses. When she eats a meal, she chews mindfully, allowing the food the nourish her body and excite her taste buds. When she walks she takes in the beauty around her. She lives in the NOW and lives each moment to the fullest!

How can this card help me relax and enjoy the holiday season?

Take a lesson from the 9 of Pentacles – make the most of what you have. Enjoy the comforts available to you. Even if you don’t have much, you can probably find something in your life to enjoy more deeply. Look at every object in your life with gratitude and appreciation. Taste your food. Feel the softness and warmth of your clothing. Look up at the roof over your head and feel joy and elation at how well it keeps you warm and dry. Revel in the fact that you have running water and indoor plumbing! Feel ecstasy when you sip your morning coffee or indulge in a late night snack of cookies and milk. Your life is full of comforts and blessings! Acknowledge them and enjoy them all!

What if I can’t enjoy things to the fullest?

It is easy to think of reasons why you can’t indulge in the comforts in your life. Let me see how many excuses I can come up with less than a minute…

I don’t have time to simply enjoy the things in my life, there is too much to be done!
I am too broke to enjoy life. I need to find a way to make more money! 

I am too stressed to just relax…
Everyone is counting on me to do things for them, there is no time for me!
I am in too much physical pain to enjoy things right now.

I am in too much emotional pain to enjoy things right now.
____(some person or thing) won’t let me enjoy myself

Do any of these sound like you? Well, I’m sorry to break it to you, but these are not valid reasons to heed the advice of the 9 of Pentacles!

Thanks, Ace. You’re right, cutting yourself off from the things you enjoy IS nonsense!


Excuses are like assholes…everyone’s got one and they all STINK!

Sorry to be so crude (no I’m not), but it has to be said! There is NO reason why you can’t take a few minutes to enjoy something in your life everyday. In fact, it is crucial that you take this time for yourself to enjoy what you already have. It is not only good for your health, but it will actually help you attract more of the good things you desire.

What might be blocking me from enjoying things more?

Odds are you have mixed feelings about luxury. I like what Brigit from Biddytarot.com says about it,

…part of you knows you deserve a beautiful home but another part of you doubts yourself and whether or not you can truly afford it or whether you are going too far and splurging. You want to be surrounded by beauty but you also do not want to be dependent on material possessions for your satisfaction and fulfillment.

Feeling this way sends mixed signals to the Universe. You want luxury, but you don’t want to seem frivolous. You want to have nice things, but you don’t want to be perceived as materialistic. You want to enjoy things, but deep down you feel undeserving or even selfish if you do!

What a head trip!

How can I let go of the beliefs that are blocking me? 

Exercise 1: Meditation with your lower chakras

It is likely that the blockages keeping you from enjoying your day-to-day comforts exist in your lower chakras. I recommend meditating to clear the blockages. I recommend starting with your Solar Plexus and working your way down. Here is an example of a clearing meditation for your Solar Plexus:

Our solar plexus, or Manipura Chakra, is a vivid yellow, associated with our social interactions, power, fears, friendships.  It is the center for a personal power. If you are energetically sensitive and feel drained by others, your Manipura Chakra is likely getting the brunt of that drain. Be mindful to meditate on clearing it often. If you feel stress, or change, you may find that you’re struggling with digestive problems, “butterflies,” and other tummy issues as well. Hold the color yellow in your mind, mentally visualize yourself fully engaged in life with a peaceful exterior. Know that there’s an field of white light encompassing your entire body, holding you in complete protection from outside energies. Carry this visualization through ten breaths, seeing yourself very clearly protected and undisturbed by the impenetrable light surrounding you.

Exercise 2: Tarot Card Meditation

Strength is a great card to work with when you need some balance in your life. The Lion represents our basal needs and desires, while the Angel represents the Higher Self/Soul aspect of the Self. Notice the way the Angel gently subdues the Lion, showing that brute force is no match for true Strength. Her power comes from her confidence, patience, and purity of intention. Working with this card can help you find balance between the needs of your Soul and your earthly desires.

Focus on this card for a few minutes. Take it all in – the scenery, the colors, the characters, the action. Allow the details to jump out at you. Then, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and relax your body. Now, imagine your desires – the things you enjoy more than anything, the things you seek because they make you feel good. Now see your higher self gently guiding your from one desire to the next, allowing you to take in as much as you need, without indulging in excess. See your Earthly desires and your soul coming into alignment. When you are finished write about your experience.

Why bother with this right now?

In the Spirit of whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year you want to be able to both give and receive fully. Balance is the key to truly enjoying life. It is not wise to give too much of yourself, for if you do not replenish your energy you will have less to give. In other words, you should not give from your reserve, only from your excess. How do you create excess energy in your life/mind/body? You heed the message of the 9 of Pentacles, indulge a little everyday – take time to savor your breath and be grateful for the good things in your life.
